Cat Spaying and Neutering

When it comes to caring for your cat, one of the most important things you can do is to spay or neuter him or her. If it's not done, it can affect your cat mentally and physically. Fortunately, if you live in or near Summit, NJ, you can bring your cat to a veterinarian near you on our team Summit Dog and Cat Hospital. Our animal clinic is here to help.

What Is It?

Spaying and neutering are procedures to remove the reproductive organs for the different genders of cats. Male cats are neutered, and female cats are spayed. This is also called having them "fixed."

Why Do It?

The main reason for this is to prevent any unwanted kittens. There's a reason why there are a lot of shelters that are full of them -- feral cats that aren't fixed are constantly mating. When animal shelters start to overflow, some of these cats are euthanized. You can help prevent the population of feral cats from increasing by making sure that your cat is fixed.

How Long Does It Take?

The process itself is usually short and easy, relative to other surgeries your cat may undergo. The recovery may still take awhile, however.

What Happens During Recovery?

Usually your cat will have to wear a cone to keep him from licking its stiches off. Also, make sure that your cat is eating and drinking like he should. After a while, he should be able to resume his usual feline activities.

Spaying or neutering can also help with possible behavior issues, especially by preventing your cat from going into heat. If your cat isn’t fixed, he may do things like spray urine around the house, which will leave a bad smell. Having a fixed cat can help ensure that he doesn’t do that and aren't prone to doing other erratic things, such as searching for a mate.
