Bringing home a furry little kitten is exciting and can really brighten your day. Before diving into the fun stuff, though, it’s important to be prepared to begin your journey. Our team at Summit Dog & Cat Hospital in Summit, NJ, have provided this quick kitten care guide to help.

Do a Store Run

While you don’t have to buy everything in the beginning, you will need some basics. These might include a bed, food for your furry friend, a litter box and litter, bowls to eat and drink from, grooming supplies, and a few toys. You’ll eventually want to consider a scratching post, a cat carrier, and additional items.

Cat-Proof Your Home

Kittens are curious and playful, so you’ll need to prepare your home a little bit. Keep house plants out of reach, unless you’re sure they aren’t toxic. Tie up any cords, such as for your window blind, so your kitten doesn’t hurt himself. Keep cleaning items put away and make sure no choking hazards are lying around.

Set up His Home and Give Him a Little Space

Bringing home a kitten is as much of an adjustment for him as for you. Set them up a space for his bed, preferably somewhere quiet and out of the way, and don’t overwhelm him with too much playing or loud noises in the beginning. He’ll need some time to get accustomed to his new environment.
